Dr. John R. Wasem

Dr. John Richard Wasem, Chiropractor Physician of Decatur, Illinois passed away on February 6,2018. Dr. Wasem was born April 22, 1927 in Patoka, Illinois. He was the son of Jacob and Mary H. Livesay Wasem. John graduated from Decatur High School in 1941. He then served in The United States Army in Germany and after World War II served as Chief Cashier at the Bank in Regansburg, Germany.

 

He married Ruth Beard in 1948 and attended Olivet Nazarene College and graduated from the National College of Chiropractic in 1952. He and his wife Ruth had one son, Mark R. Wasem, an Oil & Gas Attorney in Dallas, Texas. Ruth was deceased in 1980.

 

John married Alice Ferry Slifer in 1981. Dr. Wasem was a member of the Sangamon Club of Springfield, Illinois, The Decatur Club, Sertoma Club and Romeo all of Decatur and the American Chiropractic Society and the Association of Illinois Chiropractic Society. John was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene and taught Sunday School for 60 years. Fishing was a passion in his life. He fished the Winnepeg River in Kenora, Ontario, Canada with his friends, Tom Cross and Tim Brackett. He fished winter and summer. John was the only person who attended all 65 years of the Decatur Annual Community Thanksgiving Luncheon.

 

He leaves his son Mark Wasem, wife Suzanne and granddaughters Jacqueline and Elizabeth Wasem. He leaves his wife Alice of 36 years, his two stepdaughters, Dr. Kelly Slifer Hanley, her husband Dr. Mark Hanley of Arlington, Texas, Dr. Lisa Wichterman and her husband Dr. Keith Wichterman of Springfield, Illinois, Grandchildren, Dr. Zachary Radwine and wife Courtney, great grandchildren Braxton and Julian, stepgrandchild, Dr. Christian Wichterman, wife Dr. Jenny Travieso. Step granddaughters, Anne Wichterman Fink and her husband David Fink.

Services will be held at The First Church of the Nazarene, Decatur, Illinois on Friday, March 2, 2018. There will be a family visitation at 10 a.m. prior to the 11 a.m. memorial service.
